Even a sweltering day did nothing to awaken the Sox bats. Brad Radke tossed six innings allowing but one run on five scattered hits. He walked none and Ked 5 while looking like the best #2 pitcher the Sox will see this year. Yeah, I know IOST (its only spring training.)
Curt Schillings 1st start was about what we expected given he was on approximately a 60 pitch count. His fastball was good although he occasionally seemed to leave it out over the plate. Of the five hits he surrendered IMO the 1st was misjudged by The Glove Dog in left. Manny went back looking back over his shoulder and appeared to just miss-guess the ball, which bounded off the LF wall for a double. David marked it AOOF (any other outfielder) and we are tough markers. Next hitter rapped a 6 hopper thru the mound into CF to score the run. Later Jacque Jones lined a homer to CF with a little wind aid. Mike Restovich followed by leaning over the plate to hook a pitch away back over the LCF wall, again wind aided. Corky Miller then worked a very good AB for a walk but Curt got Luis Rivas on a hump back liner to short. Terry came out and called for Timlin to get the last out. Terrific round of applause for Curt and well deserved. It is our understanding that his next pitching will be with the minor league club next Wednesday. If he does not pitch for the big club in a game which charges for admission, he can apparently be placed on the DL (if they deem that necessary) as of tomorrow which would advance his return date by some 5 days.
Mike Timlin quickly induced a 3 unassisted to end the 4th. In the 5th he surrender what was scored as an infield single but 7,000 (admittedly Red Sox Fans) felt that Feldin Culbreth should kick his dog for lying to him. OK since Timlin aint Sonny Seibert he didnt blow his cool. A very nice 3-6-1 DP got him back where he belonged, 2 up, 2 down. Eric Munson now foul popped out to Millar and Timlin was done.
Keith Foulkes inning started with another pitch out which Michael Cuddyer leaned over the plate and hooked out of the park. An infrequent walk, a soft fly followed by a double scored another run. Foulke settled in and quickly got a 6-3 and pop to 2nd.
Matt Mantei pitched another effective 1-2-3 inning, King the last hitter on a fastball in his eyes. Somewhere Joe (chase pitch) Kerrigan is smiling.
Jeremi Gonzalez tossed the last two innings and looked good. He allowed but a Texas League single with two outs in the 9th. He also got two Ks one of each.
Home plate ump, Marvin Hudson, managed to stagger into the catchers way on a pop foul effectively keeping Sox mler Concepcion from making the play. He was soundly booed for his effort (lack of effort). Consensus in section 205 was that he was lucky it wasnt Tek or Belli catching, as either of those worthies would have run him over.
Several balls today seemed to go quite a bit further than I expected when they were hit. The breeze helped some but even balls hit to right seemed to travel.
A local guy sang the Anthem today and he was pretty good. He wasnt Larry Ford tho.
Larry is a Grammy Winner in Gospel Music field and had done 4 Anthems so far and Im here to tell you that when you hear him sing the Anthem you want him to sing the 2nd verse.
There was exactly one vendor who made it into our section today and he was peddling Salted Peanuts on an 82F day. Came around twice tho and did make some sales. Not exactly the most efficient method for getting product to the paying public.
John Pesky again brought out the line-up card. The story in the section was that while John was staying at home this ST to care for his wife, two relatives told him to come down and that they would give care.
Easter Sunday brings the Pirates and the mike, Cheri and Dave Troika will be there.
* In my town, if a girl's name does not appear regularly on a bathroom wall, water tower, or an overpass, odds are good that the date will end in frustration.

The sun is shining, the temperature is usually above 70F, Soft but cooling breezes prevail. Spring Training has started, God is in Heaven and all is right with the world.
