The thread was supposed to composed by MikeF, but with MikeFelled by a case if the stomach flu, I guess I'll have to supply today's report.
We arrived in Sarasota just minutes before game time, thanks to Rte. 75 where the dumbest (and slowest) drivers in Florida all seem to congregate and we were somewhat surprised to find the Sox starting almost all regulars against Cincinnati's Jose (not to be confused with Juan) Acevedo. The Sox countered with Bronson Arroyo coming back from his bad start on Thursday against the Orioles. Tonite Bronson pitched pretty well, striking out five and not allowing any hits or runs. However, his control was bit off and he walked three batters. It was remarked by one Reds fans near us that Arroyo did not look as good when he was forced to pitch from the stretch.
Arroyo was followed to the mound by Phil Seibel, Jamie Brown, Bobby Jones and Anastasio Martinez. None of them pitched well, even Jones who was the only one unscored upon had several hard hit balls off him. AMart took the loss when he couldn't hold a one run lead in the ninth inning. After a leadoff double the Reds sacrificed the runner to third where he scored on what should have been charged as an error against AMart when he couldn't handle a ground ball to the mound.
The hitting was led by Pokey Reese of all people, along with Kevin Youkillis. Pokey seemed to enjoy the crowd in his return to Sarasota. He hit a line drive over the CF'ers head which scored a run. In Youk's first AB he took two balls, then two strikes, then smashed a line shot over the left center field wall. Yes, it appears he may yet have enough power.
Odds and ends
Joining Felix, Fox and Lurker at the game tonite were #1 Blue Jays fan Jonas Handel along with Marathon Susan and their friend John. Big thanks go out to SoxFaninFla who got us great seats for the game. Also enjoyed his Derek Jeter stories.
We saw Vinnie from the Bronx in the crowd, wearing his blue Graig Nettles jersey with a gold chain around his neck.
Red Sox fans probably outnumbered Reds fans but it was not a noisy crowd. Wait until tomorrow for that.....
Manny ran out two ground balls harder than I've ever seen him run before. He was really moving down the line, but was thrown out each time.
Kevin Millar made a real nice catch in RF. catching a sinking line drive. He also had two singles and scored a run.
The other nice defensive play was by Pokey Reese in ending the third inning on a nice stop of a ball that was headed up the middle. Of course, Todd Walker would have had it easily.
Andy Dominique caught the final five innings. Yeah Butch, he's still fat. But he also still has some pop in his bat, flying out deep to left on one of his at-bats.
A couple of fans sported Yankees Suck T-shirts and there were a few fans in MFY hats, but nothing really outrageous was seen in the crowd.
David McCarty did nothing tonite, I'd expect Brian Daubach to play tomorrow.
Todd Van Poppel pitched a few innings for the Reds as did ex-Duquette draft choice Chris Reitsma.
BoSoxGent fave Cesar Crespo had a base hit and filled in for Manny when he left the game.
SFIF appears to be driving the Carlos Feebles Bus and would like to get a co-driver for the Brian Daubach Bus as well....
Seen on the Florida roadside... Bada Bing Adult Videos, Wings & Weenies and Mugs & Jugs. And yes we're still waiting for a SoSH report on each of these establishments. P&G oughta be a good place for each.
But the best news of the night is that MikeF will be back tomorrow.
Goodnite from Ft. Myers. Now I'm going to jump into the hot tub!
