It would be nice to see Anibal Sanchez get back on the horse after a month's worth of mediocre (by his April standards) outings.

A couple starts ago we got a scouting report from someone who watched Anibal. The observer said it looked like Anibal was using a lot of his (unpolished) secondary pitches rather then relying on his FB/CU (IIRC) combo that was so successful early on. He's still been above-average working on his bad pitches, so I think that's okay. The sox don't need him to be ready for the majors until 2008, when his options run out. It's better for him to "struggle" and work on his bad pitches now than to put up gaudy numbers without stretching and improving himself as a pitcher.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's a given that he's going to keep working on his breaking pitches. So I'd like to see him start dominating again with those pitcher in his repertoire. In short, I'd like to see him be better - is that too much to ask?

I think we can all agree with that. I just wanted to emphasize that his lack of otherworldly dominance over the past month or so was not necessarily a cause for concern.

It's either feast or famine tonight for Chris Smith. Smith gives up three home runs in three innings but strikes out five.

Greenville:

All-star Ryan Schroyer is apparently starting in place of Scott Shoemaker.

Draftee Jeff Natale is making his first pro start at 2B. Devries is catching. Both Paniagua and Stachowsky are not in the starting lineup.

The Destroyer has 3 Ks in two perfect innings.

Chuck Jeroloman (his 1st) and Austin "Powers" Easley (his 5th) have solo home runs.

Schroyer tires in the third inning and gives up three runs. Jackson now in.

Bombers trail 3-2, end 3rd

EDIT: Damn MiLB, getting the pitchers wrong.

Pawtucket:

Adam Stern is in the starting lineup and in CF.

Two errors in the first inning (Shoppach, Petagine) lead to a Durham run.

Bottom 1st - Stern walks on four pitches, Pedroia doubles to LF, Ambres drives them both in with a single

Bottom 2nd - Stern lines out to 2B on first pitch

Bottom 3rd - Pedroia walks on five pitches, Ambres and Petagine with bloop singles, Shoppach with a long double to RCF (two runs score), Lombard walks, Wooten hits a liner off Gathraight's glove for a three-base error (three runs score) ... Stern grounds out on first pitch

Bottom 4th - Pedroia grounds out 5-3 on a 3-2 count

Bottom 6th - Stern singles up the middle, Pedroia hits a clean single to LF, Ambres hits into a forceout (one run scores), Petagine singles in a run, Shoppach hits a three-run home run (his 14th) to dead center field (400+ ft.)

Bottom 7th - Stern grounds into a 1-6-3 double play.

PawSox lead 12-1, end 7th

Dustin Pedroia updates below:
1st at-bat (missed the first few pitches):
Pedroia just crushed a line drive double to left field.

He then scores on a hit to left (anyone would have scored on the ball though).

2nd at-bat:
Pitch one: strike on an off-speed pitch
Pitch two: ball low and away 1-1
Pitch three: ball outside 2-1
Pitch four: low-well low 3-1
Pitch five: fastball low again walks

One negative: Pedroia should have scored on a ball to right but held up to see if the ball would be caught. A good base runner reads that and scores easily. He then scores as the next batter (Shoppach) hits a 2-run double to the RF gap.

3rd at-bat:
Pitch One: fastball outside 1-0
Pitch two: fastball low and away 2-0
Pitch three: fastball way outside 3-0
Pitch four: fastball strike looking 3-1
Pitch five: offspeed strike looking 3-2
Pitch six: fastball, groundout to 3rd.

4th at-bat: 1st and 2nd 1 out
Pitch one: strike on the outside corner. 0-1
Pitch two: strike on the outside corner. 0-2
Pitch three: ball low and away 1-2
Pitch four: fastball ripped to left field for a single

5th at-bat:
Pitch one: strike
Pitch two: outside ball 1-1
pitch three: Popup to 2nd

2-4, walk, 2b, 2 runs

Did you want him to run through a stop sign from his manager?

edit: If he "read" the ball off the bat and the RFer didn't bobble the ball I think he's out by a lot at home plate.

No, I want him to read the ball correctly so his 3rd base coach doesn't have to give him the stop sign.

I disagree, but it doesn't really matter it was one play.

On a side note - Shawn Wooten is the slowest player I've seen since Cecil Fielder.

Pedroia grounds out pretty sharply to 3B on a 3-2 count to lead off the bottom of the 4th.
